MOUNTAIN KAZBEK 5054 m

If tracking and climbing of mountains is not an only sport for you and you like beautiful views, mythology and romantic adventures than you should hike Kazbek.
This peak is one of the most beautiful on the Caucasus ridge and most climbed mountain and popular for tourists. The mean reason is bountifulness of the hill and technically is not tricky as other 5000m mountains on Caucasian ridge.

Mount Kazbek name and location

In Georgian, the name of Mkinvartsveri (Kazbek) means peak covered with ice. Mount Kazbek is located in the north of Georgia, in the eastern part of the Caucasus, in Stepantsminda (Kazbegi region). The summit of Mount Kazbek situated on the border of Georgia and the Russian Federation

Mt Kazbek altitude

In different sources, the altitude of Kazbek was 5047m and 5033m, but in 2019, a specially created group, which measured mountain altitude with new technologies and from 2019 the official height of Kazbek, is 5054m.

Mount Kazbek climbing routes

Kazbek has five different routes for climbing – the most difficult paved road goes to Dragon rocks (category 5a).
Kazbek has four different routes except for the classical way. These four routes are more complicated than the classical pathway. From these four routes, we offer you south-east route and classical route. The South-East route climbing is more complicated than classical.
To hike a peak is not easy. The mean difficulties are the altitude, many crevasse and steep parts. Climbing often ends up for unprepared groups with rescue operations and in some cases, fatalities. However, with experienced guide go up on the mountain will be an unforgettable impression that will always stay in your mind as pleasant memories.

Necessary equipment for mount Kazbek

The list of equipment and clothes what you need during climbing mount Kazbek you can see at the end of the page. Also if you do not have some equipment, you can hire in our office.

The best time to climb Mount Kazbek

The best time to climb the mount Kazbek is from the second half of May to the end of September. However, we offer climbs at any time of the year. The main difference between summer and winter climbs is the length of day and the temperature. July and August are high seasons on the Kazbek.

Kazbek weather

Very often we have questions about what the weather would be when climbing a mountain. It is difficult to predict the weather. Even having a forecast from weather-bureau, often the real situation in the hills is a little different. At the base camp, Betlemi Hut (meteorological station or weather station) the temperature is from 0 till +10 Celsius In July and August. Although temperature often falls -5 -8 Celsius and gets colder.
At the top of the Kazbek temperature during summertime, approximately -10 - 20 Celsius. In the winter temperature may drop down to -40 Celsius. The main difficult is very Strong wind witch is very often at Kazbek mountain, heavy fog, terrains of the route makes even more challenging going up the summit, we mean a lot of crevasses, which covered with snow. It happens that people get lost in the fog, and it may be fatal, in best cases, it ends up with coming down by another route after several days.

Kazbek Facts and legends

There are many legends about this beautiful peak.
According to historical sources, on Kazbek firstly went up a local priest. After that, some tourists tried to hike the mountain, but they could not. Officially, on the mountain firstly went up Englishmen. Douglas Fresh field, Adolf Moore and Charles Tucker hiked the peak in 1868. On the slope of the Kazbek, from the side of the Gergeti on 3680m, there is a meteorological station, which was built during World War II. Today it is a hostel and cafe for alpinists.
This peak is next to the main ridge of Caucasus, on the left side of river Tergi, on the border of Georgia and Russia. Except the volcano has another name too, people call it the bride of the valley. On Southeast slope is the cave of Betlemi, which has an interesting legend. Ordinary people could not come here, so sometimes monks were hiding the Royal Treasures. For women to go there was forbidden, but they're an exciting story this cave firstly was found by the Georgian alpinist woman Alexandra Japharidze.
